Abstract:

We present new methods to speed up manipulations of atoms in a harmonic trap. We first review how atoms can be trapped by light, e.g. in a harmonic trap. Often the harmonic trap has then to be moved with the atoms inside. This should be done in such a way that if the atoms are initially in the ground state of the trap then the atoms are also in the ground state of the trap at final destination. This goal can be achieved by moving the trap very slowly but this requires a lot of time. We will show new methods to achieve a perfect transport in principle in arbitrarily short time. These methods can also be generalized to condensates and to speed up adiabatic expansion of the harmonic trap.
