Abstract

Crystals of the solid electrolytes Na+-β-alumina and Na+-β″-alumina have been synthesized by high temperature solution growth in Na2O rich fluxes between 1600 and 1700°C. Chemical analysis revealed varying compositions due to a solid solution for both materials. The mean compositions (Na1.62Al11O17.31 for Na+-β-Al2O3 and Na1.41Mg0.62Al10.45O17 for Na+-β″-Al2O3) determined by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) indicate untypical sodium contents for these compounds than described usually. For the analytical measurements certain conditions have to be observed because of the high sodium mobility in these materials.
