Abstract

We present a novel setup for optical frequency transfer through fibre which is free from uncompensated paths and, as a result, extremely insensitive to the environment. Our test setup involving a 75 km spooled fibre link achieves an instability approaching 10-21 at 104 s of averaging, even with one of the terminals temperature-cycled over 15 K. The temperature coefficient of the phase error is estimated at approximately 2 as/K, without any active temperature stabilization or thermal shielding. Fibre link terminals using the topology presented here are suitable for field deployment, for example in geodetic applications together with transportable optical clocks.
