Uncertainty and robustness in structural design

Abstract

In this paper a new numerical approach is proposed for designing robust structures. The goal is to find a design which ensures a proper behavior of the structure despite uncertainty of structural and environmental parameters. Changes of design parameters should not have dramatic effects. A three-criteria optimization problem is solved to determine the optimum design variant. Criterion I is the traditional optimization criterion, such as a minimum mass or minimum cost. Criterion II is the maximum robustness of the structure. Criterion III concerns a maximum size of a suitable range of design parameters to provide the engineer with comfortable decision margins during construction and production. The procedure is demonstrated by way of an industrial example.
