Abstract

Induction hardening is a widely used electrothermal process for improvement of the mechanical properties of metal components. It possesses numerous process-engineering and economic advantages over traditional case hardening. This article shows how the feasibility of inductive hardening of worm gears has been demonstrated by means of numerical tests and hardening experiments. It documents the development of the inductor arrangements and hardening methods used. The hardening results achieved are also presented and discussed.
